Subtitles Not Showing on Android? Causes and Fixes
Subtitle problems look alike but rarely share a cause. A missing track, a wrong default language, a timing offset and a font that cannot render your alphabet all produce different symptoms - and knowing which symptom you have points straight at the fix.
Symptom 1 - no subtitle option at all
If the player offers no subtitle track to select, none was delivered with that particular source. Subtitles and video frequently come from different places, so the same title can have subtitles on one source and none on another.
The fix is to switch the playback source rather than the title. If your app supports uploading a local subtitle file, that is the reliable fallback - download an SRT for the exact release you are watching and load it directly.
Symptom 2 - subtitles exist but in the wrong language
This is a default-language setting, not a fault. Set your preferred subtitle language in the app settings rather than choosing it per title, otherwise you will reselect it every episode.
Note that a language listed for a title is not a guarantee it exists for every episode of a series. Older or less popular episodes often have fewer tracks than the first season.
Symptom 3 - subtitles are out of sync
An offset that stays constant through the episode means the subtitle file was timed for a different release - typically one with a different intro length or an extra recap. Most players expose a subtitle delay control in steps of 0.1 or 0.5 seconds; nudge it until a line matches the audio and it will hold for the rest of the episode.
An offset that grows steadily is a different problem: the file was timed for a different frame rate. A delay control cannot fix that one - you need a different subtitle file.
Symptom 4 - boxes, question marks or blank rectangles
The subtitles are loading correctly; the font simply has no glyphs for that alphabet. This is common with Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and CJK text in players that ship a minimal Latin font.
Switch the subtitle font in the player settings to a system font, which includes full Unicode coverage on Android. If the player allows a custom font, any complete Unicode font resolves it permanently.
Symptom 5 - subtitles disappear when casting
Casting sends the video stream to the television, and depending on how it is done the subtitle track may not travel with it. If subtitles show on the phone but not on the TV, play the title on the TV device directly rather than casting to it.
How HDO FLIX handles subtitles
Subtitles cover 25 languages, and Arabic is enabled by default on most titles. When no track exists for something you are watching, you can upload your own subtitle file, or trigger automatic translation yourself.
Automatic translation is machine translation - useful for following a plot, not a substitute for a human-authored track. It is offered as a fallback for titles that have no track in your language at all, and you decide when to use it.
Frequently asked questions
Why do subtitles show as squares or question marks?+
The file is loading but the player font has no glyphs for that alphabet. Switch the subtitle font to the Android system font, which has full Unicode coverage.
How do I fix subtitles that are a few seconds off?+
Use the player's subtitle delay control. If the gap stays the same size all episode, a fixed offset corrects it. If the gap grows as the episode runs, the file was timed for a different frame rate and you need a different file.
Can I use my own subtitle file?+
In HDO FLIX, yes - you can upload a local subtitle file for a title, which is the most reliable option when no track exists in your language.
